Identity management and trust in the online world may be the new business of banking. How do you verify someone is who he or she claims to be, for example, when signing a contract? Or making sure somebody is of legal age to transact? The lack of an open and standard way to establish trust on the Internet is a big problem today. The Respect Network aims to solve this problem with a crowdsourced solution. Moreover, I believe that trust is the new service to be provided for the online world, opening new business models for banks.

“There’s a business model here that’s potentially as powerful as an advertising-based model, only it’s completely different,” says Respect Network CTO Drummond Reed. “It turns everything upside down and aligns the service providers of that network with the users to protect their data rather than exploit it.” He compares its functionality with the existing credit card networks, but instead of processing and verifying payments, the network will process and verify personal data.

Right now I’m most excited about personal clouds, which in some ways is a new name for what we used to call (and some still do call) personal data stores, lockers and vaults. Today “personal cloud” is just as oxymoronic in the marketplace as “personal computer” was in 1978 — because clouds are something only big companies have, and only big companies offer, mostly to other big companies. But, once again, we will be able to do more with personal clouds than companies can.

Innotribe representatives have been pitching the Digital Asset Grid concept since last fall in workshops with member banks, at industry conferences, in blog posts and with a four-minute film entitled “Flowers for Grandma” depicting a consumer-driven transaction like the one described above. In the meantime, Respect Network, a technology start-up in San Francisco, has been building a prototype of the rails on which the grid could run.
